I don't think anything "causes" creativity; it's something all humans have no matter how outwardly uninspired they may seem. It seems more likely (to me) that some people are encouraged to express their creative urges, or find themselves in situations where they can (or must) express it, and others either never find a suitable outlet of medium for it, or never really get the encouragement, opportunities or real motivation to go for it. And at the extreme end of the sliderule, some people have their creative instincts actively suppressed by all sorts of external social pressures. If you are born in to the Breed, for example, you do not tell your father you'd rather paint a picture than practice your bare knuckle techniques.

This goes some way toward explaining how it isn't until they find themselves in nick that some criminals reveal a talent for painting, creative writing or sculpture; until they are moved to an environment where their circumstances are entirely different and they have to change their priorities this inward artistry has to take a back seat to other, more pressing matters.

Another possibility is that people sometimes lack the motivation to explore their creative potential. For example, it isn't until people find themselves living alone that they discover first a joy and then a real talent for creative cookery, furniture-making, mechanics, gardening for veg or any number of other things they need to do in order to survive.

So where creativity is concerned I don't think the question should be "is there a horse in the stable?", the question should be "does the horse ever come out of the stable?"...

I believe everyone is born creative and it is just stifled in most. We are conditioned from a very early age to conform to society's standard about what is "the way to be" and people want to not feel like they are different or on the outside of "acceptable." Unfortunately, our society does not cultivate creativity and while people want to be entertained, people don't want their children to purpose those fields. All in all, a child who is allowed to explore and just find his/her interests is more likely to feel free enough to be "creative" without guilt or apology. It's too bad that it's discouraged and frowned upon. The Arts are a beautiful part of our society.

The right hemisphere of the brain is responsible for our creative sides. But, i also believe that there is an environmental factor to it as well, so the atmosphere in which we're born should also play a part.

Many different things, weather, feelings, emotions, people around you, animals, the outside the inside, the trees, anything that has some texture or structure to it and people who you see on the street or in the mall. You can tell a lot about a person by just observing...that can make you change things about yourself, add a new dimension to a character in a book or a painting expression....many different things...just look around you.

Boundaries. Rules. Constrictions. Or maybe boundaries help focus the creativity. Energy forced through straits. The more the obstacles, the greater the creativity.

Or not. ;-)

The freedom, happiness and joy to express who you are. If you are full of stress and pain it can hinder creativity. Get happy then get creative. Go someplace or visit someone that inspires you.
