Past & Future... In this way...
Own personal past experiences and constant planning of the future. Is this what mainly prevents us from being happy "today" which appears to be the only day we have for sure?

What do you think?

I agree, too many people have hang ups and too many plan for perfection and never acheive it! Live for today, for tomorrow we may be dead!

Yes you have a point.

The past is beyond our control, and the future is not yet in our reach. So best that we live the day to the fullest, and see it as a gift, a chance to live another day, that's why it's called the present.

Not to say that we totally forget the past. We can lift the learnings from past mistakes, or let our experiences guide is in making wiser decisions. Not to say that we totally disregard the future and adopt a "come what may" attitude, because at some point we do need to plan for the future. But the point is not to let these things occupy our minds most of the time that we forget to enjoy what we currently have.

Hello. An excellent question. Yes they are, and No they are not.
It really is a question of personal perspective.
If you wish to only brood over the past, and only worry for the future, then Oboy-are they Ever obstacles to happiness!
AND if you wish to recall Joy from the Past, while hoping for more in the Future, then Hooray! Bring on that Happiness!
I think your personal perspective on this is easily discovered. What you should do is wake up one morning (Present), and plan absolutely Nothing for tomorrow. At the same time, drop All your memories of the past, for just this present day. When a new present day arrives (tomorrow), total up what you have learned from your yesterday, and you have the answer.

I think obstacles would be too heavy word to use as far as happiness is concerned.
I'd say the future which had turned out the past due to the constant coming of today are all inspirations and motivations one has compiled in history.Thing is,human beings as we all are tend to aim for the best, for excellency to cease the day in order to brand it finally as productive so in a way we align our happiness to it to make us feel good and to guarantee a fat paycheck at the end of the month perhaps. But let's not forget that in fact it's just us setting the standards of expectations.
Past, future, present are records on how one had taken, will take and is taking charge of his life may it be bad, good, best or worst as outcomes it's for certain one struggles and strives to get the target but that's just in our character embodied in our systems.Just that in everything one does, one should take pride in it so satisfaction is achieved.

Therefore, past & future are the inspirations to motivate one's present making it a milestone to whatever endeavors one plans to undertake.

Be content at all times--yesterday,today,tomorrow make it a happy day coz life's too short to worry :)

Absolutely. We spend about 90% of our time (really) thinking about the past or the present. Take a poll, 10 people, get their guestimates about their preoccupations. Average it out. I've done it several times, and it's about 90% every time.

So, if I'm only here 10% of the time, then what kind of life am I living? And, what kind of past was I thinking about, since I wasn't really there anyway? I was preoccupied with other thoughts. And the future, that's something I create, so...

Good point, thanks.

I think our past experiences teach us to move to the present as best as we can and to mould our future as best as the angel of destiny decides. Whenever we succeed in an endeavour, we feel that it is due to our plan and hardwork. But when we fail, we put the blame on unknown Power or God whatever we may call. This is human weakness. My staunch belief is that do your duty first and leave the result to the Almighty if you feel it exists.

no. i have a **** past but i have worked hard to forget and make my present happy. look to the future, it can only bring good things, but you sometimes have to work at it to make it bright. you cant change the past but you can shape your future any way you want. at present i live in a crappy 1 bedroom council flat (due to my past and people screwing me over) with my daughter and i hate it, but i am happy. i am saving for a deposit on a house, i know my boyfriend loves me, and my daughter is beautiful, clever and amazing. no matter what you past/future, happiness will always follow you if you let it.
