I have an idea when I ovulate but its different every month? Is it always 14 days before your next period, regardless of the length of your cycle?

No, its not always 14 days before ur next period -its different every month, it varies from woman to woman and even from cycle to cycle.
The easiest thing to do is to buy an ovulation predictor kit and try to start having intercourses around 3 days before ur test shows positive; on the day it shows positive ( thats when u ovulate ) and the day after.
Timing is almost everything when it comes to baby- making :)
You could also use ovulation calculators, available on the internet, but they just give you " the best guess", whereas ovulation predictor kits measure an actual hormone ( LH ) in your urine, so they are way more reliable.
Good luck to you and i hope i helped a bit.

Women don't always ovulate right on day 14 and the day you can ovulate can change from month to month. I think you're asking about the 'luteal phase' and that is something that remains consistent for each woman, whether it's 10 or 16 days from ovulation. The luteal phase begins the day after ovulation and ends on the first day of your period. So if you're trying to conceive, the best way to understand what's going on is to start charting your temperatures. That way, you'll understand what phase you're in and know just what to do. There's a fantastic book that can help you called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility"

Hope this helps!

No it can be different. You should purchase strips that you pee on and it will tell you when you ovulate. Some other tips are to have your husband were boxers instead of briefs. Also, have him save up for a day or two before you ovulate so you can get the most out of "it".
