I had sex last night and this morning realized i had a tampon in and forgot to take it out. I havent started my monthly yet-i had been cramping a little so wanted to put one in just in case i did start. This is sooo embarrassing. Am i going to have to go to emergency room or has anyone else encountered this situation and have ideas of how to "get it out'?

it is not safe to keep it more than 8 hours you might have toxic shock syndrome....and yes since you cant take it out you will have to see a doctor

If you can get someone to help you. You can lay down on your back and RELAX have the person use one or two fingers and GENTLY probe around to see if they can pull it out. IF not please go to the doctors right away you can develop infection.

I can understand this is embarassing but you are not alone.

Lost Tampon

Dear Alice,
I had in a tampon, and now I can't find it. It was there. I tried to find it, but I can't. Is that possible? I am really worried about it. It was in for about one day. Please help.

Dear Reader,
A tampon cannot get lost in your body. The vagina is a potential space that can expand, and the tampon can get lodged near the back. It will remain there until you find it. It seems as though the string may have become twisted behind the tampon, or pushed way back in the vagina, making it difficult to reach.

When this happens, it takes some time for the vagina to relax and change position so that the tampon will return to its usual place, or at least to a more accessible location. Try "fishing around" for the tampon or string with your clean index finger. If you're not able to find it, try asking a partner.

Otherwise, see your health care provider. Explain the situation, and tell her/him that you are concerned about the loss, the odor, and toxic shock syndrome (TSS) [see postscript below for more information]. As a last resort, you can go to the emergency room. It is important to do this not only to regain peace of mind, but because the tampon will begin to smell bad, and, ultimately, because there may be a small risk of infection, including TSS.

Alice
P.S.:
Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

Toxic Shock Syndrome is a rare, but life-threatening, bacterial infection that affects between one and seventeen menstruating women per 100,000. Studies have shown that using the super plus tampons, and leaving tampons in the vagina for long amounts of time, increase the risk of developing TSS. Symptoms include a sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, fainting, dizziness, or a sunburnlike rash. To minimize the risk of TSS, wash your hands before inserting a tampon, change your tampon every four to six hours (especially on heavy flow days), and use the lowest absorbency tampon that is reasonable given the amount of your menstrual flow.

Okay, first of all, the tampon cannot possibly get "lost" in your body. Your vagina isn't infinite, so you should be able to get it out yourself.

First off, relax. This is going to be much easier if you aren't too tense. Squatting down may help - while you're squatting, bear down a little like you're trying to have a bowel movement, and then reach two fingers up inside you and feel around a bit for the wayward tampon. You should be able then to fish it out.

(I used to use the vaginal ring as birth control, which often would work its way further northward than I expected, so I got pretty good at this technique.)

Good luck.

first off that is embarrassing. secondly you arent supposed to use tampons unless you have actually started your period-pads and pantyliners are best for cramping and knowing you are getting close to your monthly. You will probably have to go to the ER and get it removed and hopefully next time you remember to use a pad if you havent actually started yet. With tampons you can get TSS-toxic shock syndrome and wearing a tampon for as long as you did plus the fact you werent on your monthly can be dangerous. good luck

First of all, this is something you will probably have to see a DR for. If you really want to avoid that, try squating and bearing down, like you're trying to push it out, if possible do it while trying to get to the string. No answers you get will beat professional help, but like you said, it is embarrassing, so give that a shot in the meantime. Hope it comes out soon!

wow thats totally embrassing! Um if you cant get it out by generally pulling it out like you usally do with a tampon i think you may have to go to the hospital out patients part and let them know what happened. I know its embrassing but you have to get it out somehow!!

Oh but can i ask.. How could you not feel it being pushed at while having sex.. Or how come he couldnt feel it?? Im actually curious about this situation as i have never heard of this happening before..

Better get to the emergency room. You don't want to risk getting an infection. Don't waste anymore time and go now. There is no other safer or hygienic way to get it out. Good Luck!

obviously you have a tampon in without a string, you can pull it out if there was a string but if you can you cant explain to your dr's office and get an appt. i wouldnt put it off too long as it may lodge further into the vagina. PLEASE do not be embarrassed as this has happened to many women i'm sure including me a time or too. be kind to yourself

Actually I just had this happen not to long ago. If you are embarassed you can go to your local Health Department. That way you will have a lady doctor. Maybe that will help you a little. I hope you are okay.

its really not possible to "lose" anything in there. you should be able to stick in a finger or two and retrieve it. i would try that and watch for any signs of toxic shock. read the tampon leaflet. if you cant get it out you should go to the doctor
