i'd take chicago if given the choice of these two places. good change of seasons, easy to travel to/from, variety of arts/leisure/sports/music, good downtown area, better food...i get the impression that memphis is just a "large small town" still.

Both have great blues.
Memphis has better ribs, Chicago has vastly better pizza.
Memphis never gets all that cold. Chicago can get both wicked hot and wicked cold.
Moneywise, Memphis is cheaper to live than Chicago. Housing stock is better in Chicago, but also more expensive.
Chicago is about 10 times bigger than Memphis, and has much more culture wise. One of the best art museums in the world, excellent theater district, Field Museum, Science and Industry.
Memphis does have Graceland and major Civil Rights sites.
Personally, I would pick Chicago, but I grew up in Wisconsin, so the cold doesn't bother me.

Chicago is no safer than Memphis. At least Memphis hasn't been murder capital for 7 of 8 years. Chicago has had 970 murders in '74, 943 murders in '92, 931 murders in '93 and 915 in '94. Chicago has averaged over 800 murders in the early 90s.

Just listen to me...I've been to both cities MANY times.
Memphis is pretty much a dump. It has MUCH less to do than Chicago. Chicago is BEAUTIFUL and offers a ton of things to do...once you're done with beale Street and Graceland in Memphis (and the zoo too), what else is there?? It's pretty rough....ever seen that show "The First 48" on A&E?? Half the show's murder cases come from Memphis...just stay away.

I think your best choice will be Memphis,TN I live in Chicago,Chicago is to bad.

Chicago, if you're looking for a city life.Memphis if you want the other.
