Ok... so just to piont this out first... i don't have very low self esteem and i am not fishing for compliments and on the other side not looking for ridicule. that being said... i saw my parents for the first time in 7 months recently. my dad said i need to lose weight. i am a size 6 or 8 pants pants and a small or medium top. I am 5'8". i didn't think i looked that bad. do i need to worry about my health being that size? it feels weird asking that cause i hadn't really thought about it much, but i don't really work out either. no one else has ever said anything, but what he said made me think about it. let me know. thanks.

Use this BMI (Body Mass Index) to find out if you are within the limits of a healthy range for your height and weight! You sound like you are to me!

Come on, don't let it bother you. You have to remember that friends or family that have not seen you in a while are going to expect you to look exactly as they saw you the last time. In that 7 months if you gained any weight at all it is going to be noticable to them. I am trying to picture a 5'8" woman in a small or medium top...I don't know diddly about size 6 or 8 because it is women's size. But my feeling is that if you are 5'8" and can wear a SMALL or MEDIUM top then what is the problem?????? Now if you were that height and needed a XXL top....maybe you should consider doing something but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Best of luck.

I'd have to say size isn't the best marker for health. I'm 5'9" and I wear a size 4-6 pants, small shirt. I look good. A more useful bit of info sizewise would have been your measurements:36,27,37.
In mine you'll notice 10" between waist and hips making me a healthier pear instead of someone who measures more straight up and down and is a less healthy apple shape.
What kinds of food you eat are also very important, low satuarted fat, good whole grains, etc. Plus you need to exercise.
So it isn't as simple as shape. As I said before, my shape looks good and I am in terrible health.
As to what your father said, is this your typical relationship with him? Is he hard on you in other ways or does he expect a lot from you? Or maybe he could not find fault and so created some. Families are complicated and messy sometimes.Parents say hurtful things without even knowing, and sometimes they do know.
I can't be sure, but I think, deep down you know you don't need to "worry about your health at your size" , I think what your father said deeply hurt you. And I don't blame you, it was a hurtful thing to say to his attractive child that he should have been complimenting after not seeing her in 7 months.

Parents say the worst things! I don't think your dad meant to be hurtful, but I'm sure you're deeply affected by the comment any way. I know I would be. Here is a website that will give you info about the "right" size for your frame. http://www.iloveindia.com/fitness/weight-loss/healthy-body-weight.html

The site offers lots of additional fitness info as well. Your pant size to height sound perfect to me, but you will be stronger and healthier well into old age if you begin a fitness program now and stick with it. I'm not suggesting hardcore workouts, just consistent fitness... things you enjoy are best. Have fun, eat well, love yourself, and remember, dad means well, but you don't have to listen to him.

The best indicator of overall health based on height and weight would be your BMI - Body Mass Index. Given your height, if you weigh between 125 and 164 lbs then you are normal. That said, if you do not exercise and adhere to a reasonably balanced diet then that may take away from your actual health status. Everything in moderation is the best motto..eat moderately and exercise moderately.

you must be very small ( weight wise) to be wearing a 6-8 size clothes. you should be wearing a 8-10 size in clothes but what you are telling me your very good for your size as long as you are eating healthy and not skipping meals. your dad sounds like he may like bigger women. you just stick with what you got and dont let anyone tell you how you should look. if you feel comfortable thats all that matters

OMG, your dad should be ashamed of himself making you feel this way. Not saying anything bad about you dad, though, ok??? Anyway, you are absolutely fine. You are on the thin side if anything. Don't give this comment a second thought. You have nothing at all to worry about.......NOTHING, except helping your dad realize how wrong it is to make a comment like that to a woman......:0)
