the green coating is of basic copper carbonate.this is equivalent to the rust in iron.
it is called VERDIGRIS-from French, which means "green-grey". In English it is known as patina.

It is called oxidation, the green stuff is probably Cu2O4 something like, the oxygen in the Air reaction with the Copper to create that green efect i don't think it starts with a v
