Difficult. One way could be to break the pattern of drinking. For example, if you go to pubs/bars stop going, find another hobby. If you have friends who drink, try to find a new group of friends. If you drink while watching TV, give up TV or stop watching. Tell all your friends/family to be supportive of your goal. These are quite easy to do, what is not so easy is why do you drink. Reasons can vary from family traumas, low self esteem, not wanting to face reality, no motivation in life, no vision.... You will need to find out why you drink and then resolve this problem. I wish you the best. Wanting to give up drinking is a good start. Good luck.

If you are not affected by alcoholism, you simply stop drinking. If you have tried and are struggling, I highly recommend going to an AA meeting. You can just listen to what folks are talking about and you don't need to talk if you don't care to. You do not have to have stopped drinking to go; the only requirement is a desire to stop drinking. I've put the link below to where you can look for meetings in your area. Most cities also have intergroups (like regional offices) that you can find under Alcoholics Anonymous in the phone book and they can tell you where local meetings are as well. If you are an extremely heavy drinker, you should discuss with your doctor prior to stopping cold turkey, as there are health risks including seizures that can happen when a heavy drinker stops cold. If this is the case, stopping drinking should be done in a detox center with medical supervision. Your doctor can also prescribe several different medications to help you quit. Many people have heard of Antabuse, which will make you feel uncomfortable and/or ill if you drink while taking it. The problem with Antabuse is that if someone really wants to drink, they can quit taking it and drink. There are other medications, such as Campral, that help alleviate the cravings for drinking; they affect the physiological changes that have occurred in the mind of someone with an addiction issue with alcohol. There are also many rehabilitation centers that focus on alcohol addiction, ranging from inpatient where you are there 24/7, generally from a week to 28 days, to 'intensive out patient' where you attend groups three times a week, or other amounts of groups and therapy. As a first resort, AA would be a good place to start.

Lastly, understand that if you have found that you are having problems with alcohol and have become addicted that you are suffering from a disease, and it is not as easy as simply stopping. This does not mean you are a bad person, or that you simply have a weak will power. While there is no cure for alcoholism, there is treatment that works. Many people in recovery live very fulfilling lives. It is likely that you know people who are in recovery, but are not aware of that fact. The stereotype that many have of an alcoholic is generally a very incorrect image. It takes work to remain clean, but has immense rewards.

I keep a can of warm beer on top of my fridge. I would never drink warm beer so to actually have a drink, I would need to put it in the fridge, leave it for a few hours and then drink it, in that time I would have lots of opportunity to gather up some will power and take it back out of the fridge.

It works in the summer but in the winter its about as cold outside the fridge as inside so it doesn't work.

I've also tried replacing alcoholic beverages with something else, iced tea, juice, anything is fine. For me part of the reason I drink, is just having a glass of something in front of me while I watch tv, play on the computer etc. Replacing it with a non-alcoholic beverage works fine.

Depending upon how severe your problem is, it depends. If you're an alcoholic, you will need professional help-either inpatient or outpatient. It's also important to try AA meetings, they are great for support, and being around others who have the same problem as you. If it's just peer pressure, try finding a new group of friends.

Pick up a decent hobby of some-sort other than drinking. It's okay to tell yourself "no." And if all else fails, join AA if you honestly think you have a problem with alcohol.

Get in contact with a counselor that specializes with Alcohol abuse.
You need to get to the bottom of why you are drinking and deal with that to be able to stop.
You may even need guidance from your doctor. The doctor could help get you o a programme.

It will work best if you can just quit drinking. Be strong and control yourself.

If you can't just stop right away, try to reduce the number of glasses each time you drink. But you must be strick and really put your mind to it, that's the most important thing.
