Well I know some clip more then 2. My dad use to clip 2 pens in his pockets, a red and a blue. He was a teacher. Red for marking paper and blue for normal writting.
I do carry 2 pens with me too but not clip on pockets. One blue another black. Normally I like to use the black one but if need to sign a document, I will use the blue. Photocopy (normal one not the colour) will look the same if you use the black pen.

Actually your question is two toned. First...why 2 pens....2nd.....why on their shirt pockets.
The number of pens is really a matter of preference. One or two or more does not really matter. Why on their shirt pockets? Well I think it is more convenient to clip it on your shirt pocket than clip it or put it in your rear or front pants pockets. If you put them in your rear pocket and if you sit, you will most likely break the pen. If you put it in your front pants pocket and you sit, they poke you and there is also that tendency to break. Most men who clip their pens on their clothes don't carry bags around, so where do you think is the best place to clip them (tucked on their ears like some carpenters?).
Now, how come most women don't carry any pen even if they carry handbags around?

Because they like to think that doing so makes them look important. All "Oh hold on, let me write this down, WITH THIS PEN IN MY POCKET."

He's so protective of that little pen that's just sitting there in his pocket, I don't understand it at all....
