I learned this lesson the hard way. When it is hot and dry, I water. When I finish watering, I water some more. Cedars don't like the water so much. They like a drink if the soil is well drained. Too much water turns them brown.

i have dug and planted cedar tree,s for 34 years when you transplant a cedar tree,s it is very important to make sure it is dug on day it is planted and it take,s one year for a cedar tree to reroot and as for going brown yes water is very important that is the reason we install a soaker hose you give it one year no matter what i have seen tree,s go all brown and come back that next year come right back all green you have to make a honest attempt to water for the first year if you do i guarantee they come back all green some people say they watered but after the cedar hedge is in for a month or 2 they forget or think it is ok now i know i get calls all the time the first year and after 2 years i will check on them and out of a hundred cedar trees may be 10 to 15 did not take and that is the average the cedarman 34 years and 1000s of hedger.s dug and planted thank you

This is not uncommon on a newly transplanted hedge. The roots have not had time to spread, resulting in less water intake than normal.

I know you said you watered it. Well, water it more. Make sue you water underneath, right at the base of the trunk as this is where the roots are.

also, with many evergreens, brown leaves can mean the plant is already dead, or close to it.

Get under it and carefully scrap off a little bit of bark. Between the bark and the woody part should be a green layer called the Cambium, if gentle scratching does not reveal any Cambium, it means it is dead already. In which case, take it back and get a new one (means they sold you a dead one).
