Hi, I have been having a big imagination and lots of good dreams lately, so I decided to put them on paper and have almost completed a whole novel. I do not have any college education in writing, just in computers, and do not know any of the steps to get my novel published, or copyrighted and was looking for someone who does to advise me the steps. I am broke and have no money so what does it cost and how much might I make? I have a good imagination and am thinking of trying to write more in the future. This paticular novel I would classify as an adult fiction thriller. any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

You can do this at the US Copyright Office – see the last 2 links in the source box. The application is fairly simple & the cost is $45 per application.

Despite what others state, a "poor man's" copyright is NOT the same as registering it. Here's what the US Copyright Office has to say:

"The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a 'poor man’s copyright.' There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration."

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Go to http://www.copyright.gov to get a copyright for your novel. It costs about 30 dollars. To get it published, you have to make copies of your novel and send it to different publishers in hopes they will agree to publish it. Then they'll get different book reviewers to give it a positive review and put it on a book jacket, if you want I think. You may hire an artist to draw pictures for your book. I'd say, if your novel didn't become wildly popular but fairly, I'd say on a national scale a few ten grand.

There is a publication called the Writer's Digest. It would be a good place to start. Good luck.
