The long and short of it the movie is: The world that we know doesn't really exist as we know it. We are all living in a computer generated world, and we don't know it.

You must watch it with an open mind and think what else could it mean other than what is happening in the movie. Part of the greatness that is the matrix is the movie means or is about what you thing it is about. You can ask what is going on in whatever scene and someone can tell you what they think and some else will tell you something different. It can be philosophical or religious or the meaning modern man or just a cool action movie. Asking a true believer to summarize the movie is like asking to summarize the new testament or the meaning of purpose. Ask about one part of the movie you don't understand, that would be easier to explain in a way that you can interpret it for yourself.

I think it's a retelling of the Buddhist idea of the world being and illusion and needing a Buddah to guide you out of that illusion. I've also heard people describe it as a Christian retelling of Jesus having to save mankind from itself and the hold of the devil.
Keanu plays Neo who is kind of a coputer hacker. He works for an IBM like company and starts fooling around wihth some questionable characters. Eventually it is revealed to him that the life he is seeing in an illusion coming form a computer and that his existance is being used for energy to keep the computer "alive". He takes on the challange of freeing himself and then others of that illusory world. In between he leanrs all kind of martial arts, falls in love and has someone betray him (Judas if you will) All the while he is being pursued by the computer's henchmen "Smith"- darkness always follows light and of course being light he defeats the darkness. Another intruiging character is a prophetess who tells his fortune so to say. He is brought there by the character that believes he is the "One"
all in all, besides the violence the spec effects are great and fun- see the movie, it's on of my favs.

It is a fractal theory where the two main character Smith and Neo represent evil and good and it is time for them to combat one another. I can see where Neo being the one be confusing, the way he seems to be this great leader, this great savior, but at the end of the movie the only one saved is him. The story was always intended to go much further. Basically, the Oracle is supposed to enlighten Neo as to his potential and sit back and watch. Morpheus is there to kill Neo so that he can be reborn the one. Trinity is there to give Neo balance and love, something Smith lacks. That is how Neo is able to save her. It is how she is able to save Neo. It is also why Smith explodes when Neo jumps into him. Neo is too large for Smith's program to contain him.
I could go on but you limited me to film one. Trinity is not the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost. Morpheus is not Lazarus. And the Oracle is not John the Baptist.

It would be easier for you to just go and watch the movie than for anyone to explain it.
