It's a way that the teacher can evaluate how smart kids are and make educated guesses on students future grades. Kinda like a teachers way of gambling on a students intelligence.

Statistics gather results ... a students test results in your question ... and get an average of what the student did ... is the kid an A student, B student ... and then using past test grades, the teacher can mathematically look at what to expect from each student.

This is done with just about everything in life for a statician. Staticians will look at people life expectancies ... base-balls hitting scores ... ballerina's dancing performances ... who will win the big poker game ... stock market ... even who will be the next Pope ... all based off gathering date and then simulating a future forecast.

T statistics is a way to get an estimated distribution of the population when the actual standard deviation of the population is unknown. This means you use your samples variance to calculate an estimate of the standard deviation of the population. Once this is done, you can compare the expected mean of the sample/population (what it should be) with what your samples mean is actually. If this is too far away, then you know that something is causing it to be different than what you expect.
You do this through a couple quick formulas and a T table.

A t-test compares the difference between the means of 2 treatment groups with the variations of the individual measurements within the treatment groups (standard deviation) to determine the likelihood of the difference between the treatment groups to occur by chance alone rather than by an effect of the treatment.
