It's an instinct, it has to do with thrusting power and the ability to impregnate.
Guys check out women the same way.
Men usually find women with big boobs attractive b/c on some level we believe it to be a symbol of fertility.

same reason why a guy checks out a girls butt. but maybe not the same reasons. but it is also because nice butts tell alot about the guy. if they work out they have a nice firm butt if not they have that jiggly jello butt or a saggy butt. and working out impresses women. so you guys need to work that butt out to get a girl!!!!! lol

I like to check out a guys butt cuz I can freely do so without them noticing....personally I like guys eyes but it's not often I can stare at them because I'm too shy.....But when they turn around...oh yeah......especially when they wear kinda loose jeans and when they bend over....wow! : P

It mostly comes from the innate drive to breed well.
Most things that either sex "check out" have mostly to do with two things:
1) youth,
2) wealth.
In this case, it probably has to do with youth. As bodies age, they tend to sag. This comes from various reasons, but one is the natural breakdown of collagen and elastin in our skin.
Also, muscle tone can be a sign of both youth and health, which are both related to breeding fitness.
So, younger and healthier bodies will tend to have butts that are tighter and firmer. Youth is important to create healthy children mostly because of genetic damage that occurs to reproductive cells over time with age.
Sexual attraction is mostly related to fitness for breeding and nurturing, in that the primary natural function of sex is to reproduce fit young: those who do this successfully will tend to be here in the future and those who don't won't.
Because we ARE here now, that means that your ancestors did a good job of judging fitness to breed and one of the guidelines that has apparently worked and been passed down is to "check out" the guys butt prior to breeding with him.
