First, I have no problem with the gay community. I even think they should be allowed to get married and be as miserable as the rest of us :) However, I hate that they hijacked the rainbow. I mean, straight people don't have a symbol, do we? No. Anyhoo, if you've seen "Clerks II", the one guy says about a particularly offensive phrase that he's "taking it back". While the rainbow being used by gays as a symbol isn't offensive to me, I do miss being able to wear a rainbow without being called queer. I realize the gay community uses the rainbow b/c it's a universally recognized symbol that promotes a kind of unity. I get it. HOWEVER, I used to love wearing rainbow stuff when I was a kid. I'd like to wear rainbow ANYTHING without people saying something snide. So, I'm taking it back. I'm taking back the rainbow. I'm going to wear head-to-toe rainbow stuff and just tell people who call me queer that no, I'm straight, but I'm taking it back. I'M TAKING BACK THE RAINBOW. If this offends the gay community, I'm sorry, but I'm taking it back. People who dig rainbows, UNITE! Let's take it back! *wearing rainbow suspenders*

The rainbow flag is not ONLY used by the GLBT culture. The use of 'rainbow' flags has a long tradition; they are displayed in many cultures around the world as a sign of diversity and inclusiveness, of hope and of yearning. This denotation goes back to the rainbow as a symbolic promise, and the use of all the colors of the rainbow symbolises all flags in one.

There are several, unrelated rainbow flags in use today. The rainbow flag representing gay pride just happens to be the most widely recognized. The 'rainbow' peace flag is especially popular in Italy. There are also other, less well known 'rainbow' flags of a similar design, used for different purposes.

A) Get over yourself.
B) Other groups also use the Rainbow, like Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition. Why not pick on them, or express your disgust over their usurping your symbol? Could it be because you're a hypocrite who doesn't want to appear racist, but gaybashing is ok?
C) The Gay Rainbow has six colors: Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Purple. God's Rainbow has seven: Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet. They are not the same.
D) The Gay Rainbow was designed to show diversity. Originally it had two more colors; one was dropped because of inconsistency in the colored fabric and the second dropped because the Gay Pride organizers in SF wanted three colors on each side of the center divide going down Market Street.
E) Get over yourself.

The flag was originally designed by San Francisco artist, Gilbert Baker, in 1978 and was intended to be a symbol of gay and lesbian pride. It was inspired by the Flag of the Races which had five stripes, each one representing the colors of human kind. The six colors of the flag — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple — represent the diversity and unity within the LGBT movement. The widespread use of the flag is due less to any official recognition of it as a symbol and more to its adoption by members of the LGBT community.

It is not right that you label people you don't understand as sick, or that you invoke the name of God as though he belongs only to you, and not to all of us. That is a misuse of His name.

The rainbow, in it's many colors is a symbol of diversity. That we come in many shapes, sizes, colors and orientations. As a symbol of diversity, gay people use it to symbolize a unity of mankind, not as a means of separation.

Please, if you are going to talk about God, know that he loves all his children, and that he sent his Son, Jesus Christ to live among us, that he might teach us about inclusion and love.

I don't think it is being misused. It is a symbol for them which includes everyone, all of the colors of the rainbow, everyone is accepted.

I'm not gay either but rainbows are awesome. Reminds me of dark side of the moon and prisms. Makes me think how our brain operates. Refacting singals and creating reality. I think it is cool they picked the rainbow because life is about differences and understanding them.

I think what makes me most happy about your question is that you are so disturbed about the rainbow. I'm glad that you are so twisted that gays took the rainbow symbol. What else do you like becuase maybe we can highjack that as well. Loser.
