There is no such thing as a garden snake. What you probably have is a Garter Snake. Wild garters can eat different things from insects to earthworms small frogs and fish. Sometimes mice. It depends what kind of garter it is and where it's from. Wild caught garters will probably not eat in captivity. Just let it go where you found it. They need special care to live in captivity. To set up an enclosure properly it's going to be pretty expensive.

That depends. Snake in the garden is kinda vague. If it's thin, long, and green, it's either a rough or smooth green tree snake. they eat crickets, which you can buy for like 10 cents a piece at any pet store. If it has a dark top, and a bluish tint on it's underbelly, or is blue all over, just release it. Those are black racers and Indigo racers. They hardly EVER eat in captivity. The houston zoo has around 80% of the world's reptiles species. Usually they have 4 or 5 of each species, but only one of each racer, because they are horrible in captivity. If you want to try, Indigo racers eat bugs, black racers eat mice. If it has a dark top and a bottom that looks like a checkerboard, kinda, it's a rat or corn snake. They eat mice. If it has stripes on it's back, it's a garter snake. Try bugs. If it doesn't eat after 4 weeks, let it go. It'll be fine.

Yes mice, I believe the mice have to be live too otherwise a snake won't eat it. I could be wrong but I was always told that you have to feed snakes live food. I've taken care of several snakes in the past and always feed them live mice or rats. Not the nicest thing in the world to see but the snakes have to eat right! Maybe a garden snake would like lizards and frogs too! Snakes are great btw, good luck with your new pet!

They do NOT eat mice. (they would eat a pinky) GEESH people. Garter snakes eat small amphibians, fish, and earthworms. I had one and i fed it goldfish. I simply had a large bowl of water and would put a goldfish in it for him. I have to agree with this though, If you found the snake outside, put it back. Let the wild be wild and purchase yourself a snake. If you really want a serpentine friend get a ball python (great for beginners) or if you like the more long slender snakes go for a corn snake.

I've got two Eastern Garters that I've raised from birth (wild snakes) to over 4ft long. I can assure you that they will eat mice, starting with pinkies & progressing to full grown mice. And no, they don't have to be alive. All mine have been fed frozen mice all their lives. When they're young, they will eat earthworms & love small fish(minnows), but I've never seen them eat very many insects.

Garden or Garter snakes are carnivorous and will eat almost anything smaller then them; this including insects, worms, rodents, small lizards and frogs. Depending on the habitat they can also eat small birds and fish.

it probably won't eat for you since its wild and not used to being given food so just let it go and go to the pet store and buy yourself a nice corn snake or ball python, which ever you prefer.
