Because that means the terrorists win.
Of all the times I've heard that phrase used as justification for the most stupid arguments, it actually applies here.
Hezbollah doesn't want to negotiate. Hezbollah attacked Israel, unprovoked. Hezbollah continues to fire rockets into Israel, targeting Israeli civilians.
Israel has offered a cease-fire, since about day 4, on two conditions. One, that Hezbollah return the two soldiers that they had kidnapped. And two, that Hezbollah stop firing rockets into Israel. Hezbollah could have ended this at any point before the Israeli ground troops ever crossed the Lebanese border. They didn't, because Hezbollah has vowed to wipe Israel off the face of the map, and they wanted this fight.
Now that they are actually faced with an Israeli army on their doorsteps, they are crying for the international community to protect them. But any cease-fire is going to end up being unilateral, with Israel abiding by it and Hezbollah continuing their attacks.
So, what incentive does Israel have to yet again (the fourth time in two decades) cease fire and allow Hezbollah to regroup and recover?
For a much better explanation of this strategy, and why Israel can't allow it to work, check out the link below.

Probably because the time has come for an end to Islamo-facism, and because it is suspected that Saudi Arabia supports terrorism behind the scenes.
Hezbollah continued to fire rockets into Israel when Israel offered a 48 hour cessation so civilians could leave the areas of conflict. Hezbollah deserves to be eliminated and eradicated along with the rest of hate filled Islamo-facist organizations.

From the perspective of Israeli government. Hezbollah will always attack them. Israel is trying to make a sustainable cease fire while trying to kill off as many of their enemies as they can. Frankly, I believe as soon as this started Americans should've been in there with other countries to ask what the hell is up. It couldn't hurt to try. Everyone knows that even if the truce isn't reachable immediately.. why not try?? Come on, it's worth it. Aren't civilian lives worth a cease-fire?

Because Hezbollah will not honor the cease fire unless it is to regroup. As soon as they do that they will be right back to attacking Israel. They stated the only thing they wish is the utter destruction of Israel. What does that leave to negotiate?

Hezbollah does not want peace as their objective is the destruction of Israel. If a cease fire is obtained with Hezbollah still intact it will only lead to further attacks on Israel.

Q: Why didn't he do ______?
A: Because he didn't want to.
Ya see, your question presumes that it's Bush's job to do whatever the Saudis want, and that by NOT doing what they asked, he did something wrong. This is incorrect. The Saudis want one thing; Bush wants another.
