It's Supply & Demand, pure and simple!

The Prices paid to the Top Rookies...in almost all sports...are truly Ridiculous!!!...But with such an emphasis on Winning...Many teams are willing to Gamble on a possible Franchise Player that they can build a team around!

Signing a Potential Superstar can boost Season-Ticket Sales dramatically!!! It creates Media Attention & Hype...and shows Existing Team Members that Ownership is committed to producing a Championship Team! (...which often keeps them from moving on to other teams with a better chance of winning. )

More money pours in from Advertisers, Lucrative Merchandising Deals are made, etc, etc. ( Also, Top Players from Lesser Teams take notice as their contracts are running-out...hoping to move-on to a Contender!...A great player doesn't want to spend an entire career on a Losing Team! )

The Main Problem is...there are often only a Handful of Truly Outstanding athletes available in many of the Yearly Drafts!!!...And, Most Teams are Focused on-the-Future, as well as the current season...So, there are Many Bidders!...And, it becomes a Bidding-War!!!

( The proven veterans, nearing retirement, are then expendable...You can find many other capable veterans on bottom-dwelling teams that will jump asap for a chance to win-it-all before retirement! )

It's a Gamble...Some Win Big-Time...Some Lose Big-Time!

Welll yeah...I think it's retarded that rookies get paid so much before they've even shown what they can do against the professionals...I say every rookie gets signed on a set price based on the round and number drafted...starting moderately high..then going down for a while then just stays the same after whatever round...have it be like a 2 year "Are you worth more money" kind of deal...then pay them more...I'd gladly sign with a team for way less than what those guys are getting...I'd rather play the game than make that much money...It's turning into a business...even the "danger" and fun are being pulled slowly...:(

That is the reason why salaries are out of control; the NFL should do like the NBA and initiate a rookie salary cap. Very few players are worth that much money before they even come on the field.
