I have an emachine too. I have trouble burning CDs on it because they have a very weak CD drive. I had to get an external one because it was very weak and it never worked properly for me. You cant really fix the CD drive on a computer if it is a weak drive, so you should take it to a technician and replace it. You can buy really cheap CD drivers from http://www.newegg.com or http://www.tigerdirect.com There are no tricks to get the CD drive working if its a faulty driver. Or you can get a cheap external driver for $30 and just use that instead. Cleaning the CD or cleaning the driver will not help. Emachines install a very weak CD drive.

What I understand from your question is that you are trying to rip the CD (i.e, trying to copy the songs from your CD to your computer)? Before ripping check if you are able to play the songs from your CD. May be the problem is with the CD (though the C might look clean from outside, it might be corrupt. We can't tell from looking at it). Check if your computer is able to read other CDs. If it is, then the CD is faulty, get a new one. If your computer is not reading any CDs at all then the problem is with your CD drive. Check if the green light blinks at the D drive when you put in a CD. If blinking, then you can try using a CD drive lens cleaning kit. Use it as the last option as CD drive cleaning kits are not always safe and may damage your drive forever.

usually when a CD is not being read, it may be because that your CD -ROm Lense are dirty which can be fix by a CD cleaner, or that the CD-Rom is kinda faulty. Have you tried with other CDs? Tryo other CDs if they dun work also then there is something wrong with the CD Rom. If your CD Rom cannot read that CD only, that means that your CD Rom is ok, but you can try to use other program to open it. There is like so many programs out there. Winamp, Real Palyer, WMP, and etc. If this does not help, try using the CD into your friends computer. If its still the same then your CD is the fault.

You can't burn a CD to Windows Media Player. You mean rip the music from the CD to WMP?? Is this the original music CD? What kind of CD anyways? If this a copy of a music CD, what format of the songs, MP3 or something else? Need more info for us to help you.

Make sure The CD Drive Lens is clean, You will get CD Drive Lens Cleaners in the market .

Make sure your CD Drive Supports CD-R, CD-RW

Check the CD in Your Friends CD Drive inorder to confirm the faulty CD Drive.

Make Sure no scratch on the CD on both the sides.

NB: The CD becomes unreadable if the Silver coating on the top of the CD gets peeled or scratched. Even a pin hole scratch on the silver coating will make it unreadable. Scratch on the Coating is more dangerous than a scratch on the bottom side of the CD.

Cheers

Yes - try using a cleaner CD.

If you are using an old CD drive (lower speed) to read a CD burnt on a new drive (burnt at a higher speed) - you may not get it to read.

Some CD drives have problems recognizing certain CDR's. That could be the problem.

You don't have to burn it to media player. Just add it to your "playlist."

Hope that helps.
