What was the name of the billionaire who gave his money away? He had a syndicated newspaper column, and each week would pick someone from the God-knows HOW many sob-story letters he got, and give them some money. Who was he? Is he still alive? More importantly, is he still giving his money away (and oh have I got a sob story for him!)?

It's not Warren Buffet. The guy I'm thinking of had a sydndicated newspaper column through the 80's and , I think, early to mid 90's. Every week he would publish and reply to which ever person he was sending the money to. I believe his goal was to give away every penny he had before he died. Thanks for the answers, but it wasn't Warren Buffet!

I know Warren Buffet of Berkshire-Hathaway in Omaha is giving away his entire fortune to charity beginning now and even after death.

It is Warren Buffett. He made his money in the stock market with the philosophy of investing in companies that he believed in. For example he invested in Gillette because he knew most successful men shave. He is alive. His wife has died. He left most of his money which will be given over the course of his life to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It helps in education and health world wide. Before Warren's gift, the foundation was the largest American charitable foundation for the world worth 30bln. Warren just gave another 30bln to the charity. It's purpose is to help the rest of the world in their needs. 60bln is not bad, since the rate of appreciation though componding interests is staggering. Example if you have 1,000,000 in the bank and an compound interest rate of just 5%, you could literally pull out 7,500 US dollars a month and never deplete the original 1,000,000.

I don't know what answer you re expecting. But I want to ask how and what makes you think it is "your" money or that you deserve anything at all? I prefer that part of the taxes I pay go to schools, roads, and to companies that hire thousands of fellow American so they won't lose their jobs than to someone who thinks the government owes them a living and hand outs A democrat said it best and you should remember it " Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country".
