As is so often the case with rushed sequels, the new testament lacks the quirky sense of high drama of the original installment. Despite its marvelously inventive plot twists, it is my considered opinion that certain portions of the Bible are simply too ribald for children and no more suitable in a Christian home than a copy of Hustler! I do not allow smut in my home regardless of the author and, frankly, one is hard pressed to find a book more salacious than the one written by our blessed lord.

That's an interesting thought as I have heard of school boards wanting to keep the bible out, not because of any Judaeo-Christian bigotry, but because of the gruesomeness contained within the text!

I do tend to agree with you in principle. The Christian addenda is fairly benign as about the worst of it is the snuff scenes found in the first four parts. Everything else, from cursing of fig trees to forcing hogs to drown themselves, is rather tame.

However, the Jewish Tanakh is definitely not suited for pre-teens at the very least. Killing off and entire family because a guy wanted a nice suit, hewing a royal prisoner under the protective custody of the king, getting a guy killed because he got the guy's wife pregnant; these are supposed to be the good guys! When we throw in tidbits such as children and cattle being of equal value, being cursed by your grandfather because your dad found him drunk and naked, and laws that allow a father to sell his daughter into slavery, I suppose the movie version would be very close to an NC-17 rating!

I suppose that the two redeeming factors are (1) there are no pictures that specifically come with the book, and (2) most people will read only parts of the book in the first place, it might be OK just as long as the gruesome parts are ignored.

It's not the smut in the Bible that I'd worry about...it's the violence and childish behaviour.

Its the only book we are supposed to read that is full of sex, violence, bestiality, hate, swearing, witchcraft, killing, stealing and the hero dies!

It's probably difficult reading when most homo's were either executed for their perversity or annihilated with fire by God.

Then you are not a Christian, and you don't have a Christian home.
