Hey there...
Lithium compounds are regarded as slightly toxic
Sometimes, lithium-based drugs such as lithium carbonate (Li?CO#) are used to treat manic-depressive disorders in doses of around 0.5 g - 2 g daily.
Some side effects are known.
Ingestion of large amounts of lithium results in drowsiness, slurred speech, vomiting, and other symptoms. Excess lithium poisons the central nervous system

As long as it's taken on a regular schedule while maintaining a diet that contains a consistent amount of salt, lithium is a very good drug that can decrease the peaks and valley's of bipolar disorder. It will allow the person to maintain a "middle of the road" life. Many people that are bipolar will have an episode in which they hear voices or they feel like people are out to get them. They feel like they don't need the lithium and it's doing more harm than good so they will stop taking the medicine. It's just an endless cycle of taking and not taking the medicine. Blood levels of the drug have to be strictly monitored.

i'm not sure, but think i might have read that we already have some amount of Lithium in our bodies? also - I've been on Lithium twice long ago, but I had the toxic side effects; nausea and vomiting. and I thinks there were other bad side effects that I had. also, guess u already know that : The amount of Lithium that Helps IS close to the Amount -that can be Toxic.
when i used to go to Mental Health, there was a lady who had to be hospitalized due to the Toxic side effects; Doc's are supposed to monitor U closely, to make sure IT does not become toxic, etc. Best Wishes; I take Zyprexa now; been yrs since i took Lithium. ----not sure If i like Zyprexa or not but have taken it most of time for about 5 yrs. now; weight gain of 20 lbs; lost 5 lbs recently and still on it----STRANGE, THO.
-AND IT CAUSE ME (ZYPREXA - TO NEED 12 TO 18 HRS SLEEP PER DAY --ON THE average! -- and i'm tired of that; but I don't get Sinus Infections and as many other infections, sore throats, bronchotis, etc - including Colds, etc ----the way i did when OFF med. for 4 yrs --a fews yrs Back; probably cuz i sleep so much and get enough Rest now ------too much Rest - of course. Best wishes!

A person very close to me uses lithium (for bipolar disorder). I am not sure if it is doing much harm, but it definately balances her out. I would much prefer her not to have to take it... and yet, I am inclined to appriciate how it helps her.
