try replacing batteries, or pluggin it into another usb port. then again you might have to reinstal a driver, you can find those at the manufactuers site.

Try using a different "mouse pad" or putting it on a different surface. I have a USB opti-mouse for my laptop, and it had that problem. There was some problem with the color and pattern on the old pad, and the mouse has no problem on the new one. I think it might have something to do with large sections/fields of red.
{yes, I know optis don't need a pad. I use a pad with a wrist-guard}

Make sure there's nothing stuck in the little area where the sensor light is like a crumb or anything. Blow it out with canned air, or if you can see it just pull it out.
Good Luck
Also, make sure you aren't trying to use it on glass desktop. Won't work right with glass. I suggested to someone to use a piece of linoleum or paneling like a pad.

Whenever mine starts to act like that, I turn it upside down, look into the gap that the light sets in, and blow out the little hair that's stuck in there. We have dogs and they shed and it gets into just about anything you think it shouldn't. So my advice would be to see if there is something blocking the light from shining through the gap on the bottom and clean it out

There may just be a piece of dust where the laser is, or maybe you're using a wrong mouse pad for it, Try blowing on the laser.
