WE HAD THE BEST TIME THERE! PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IS GREAT IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET TO PLACES. IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME BUT WE STAYED AT THE RENAISSANCE CENTER AND WERE CLOSE TO HART PLAZA WHERE THEY HAD A DIFFERENT FESTIVALS EVERY WEEKEND. THERE WERE A LOT OF NICE PEOPLE THERE BUT YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TALK TO AND DON'T GIVE ANYONE MONEY!! THEY WILL ASK! WE DIDN'T GO MUCH VERY LATE AT NIGHT FOR OBVIOUS REASONS AND NEVER WENT ANYWHERE ALONE. WE DIDN'T EVEN LET THE KIDS GO ALONE IN THE HOTEL AND IT WAS A VERY NICE ONE. THEY WERE NOT HAPPY TO HOLD MY HAND OUTSIDE UNTIL THEY GOT THE CRAP SCARED OUT OF THEM, THEN THEY DID IT ON THEIR OWN AND MY DAUGHTER WAS 15!! I WANTED THEM TO HAVE FUN BUT BE SCARED ENOUGH NOT TO DO ANYTHING STUPID.
WE RODE THE 'STAR OF DETROIT' CRUSE BOAT DOWN THE DETROIT RIVER. TOOK A BUS IN THE TUNNEL UNDER THE RIVER FOR FUN TO CANADA. DON'T HANG AT THE TOURISTY PLACES, THERE ARE A LOT OF NICE PLACES TO SEE IN WINDSOR. HENRY FORD MUSEUM WAS FUN, YOU COULD SPEND A WEEK THERE AND IT'S NOT FAR ON A BUS. WE TOOK BUSES OR THE PEOPLE MOVER EVERYWHERE WE WENT TO SHOP AND EAT. WE DID TOO MANY THINGS TO LIST. CHECK WEB SITES AND YOU WILL FIND TONS OF STUFF TO SEE. JUST BE CAREFUL AND YOU WILL HAVE A LOT OF FUN... AND IF YOU MAKE IT OUT ALIVE YOU CAN BRING BACK THE T-SHIRT THAT SAYS, ''I'M SO BAD, I VACATIONED IN DETROIT!''
HAVE A GREAT TIME!

Detroit has a lot of great things you can do just in the City of Detroit. Some of the places you can see included Comerica Park for a Detroit Tigers game, taking a tour of Ford Field where Super Bowl XL was held, and trying a variety of restaurants. Detroit has four major museums; the Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Science Center, and the Charles Wright Museum of African American History. Detroit also has a lot of historical churches and theatres including the FOX Theatre. You can look at the Detroit Metro Convention & Visiting Bureau website to look at more information and I hope that you enjoy your trip.

WOW the misconceptions abound
You are never safer than in the Downtown Detroit Area
uhh lets see
Undercover Police everywhere
FBI, ATF, State Police, Coast Guard,
Motor Carrier Division (Weighmaster actually has more authority tham the State Police), Border Patrol,
ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)
Wayne County Sheriff and the Detroit Police.
In fact I used to work part time at Ford Field
and would take the bus there to save on parking.
Well I missed the return bus and a homeless person was near there and talking to me as I waited for my ride to show.
Well I moved away from the bus shelter so my ride could spot me and a car pulled up with a man and woman asking if I was allright...well in true Detroit fashion I said "who the hell are you".
They replied we are undercover officers and were watching you to make sure your OK.
Just don't venture off into the nieghborhoods around.
But the Freeways to the suburbs your fine!
Hey you look like a victim you are a victim...it's all how you carry yourself.
Have fun

Man the bashing just continues and continues and continues on Detroit. Thanks Mr. Knowledgable for being somewhat fair to and insightful towards the city; it obviously has its' problems and bad parts but Detroit does have plenty to offer and there are most certainly perfectly safe areas. I'm assuming most of the other responders are suburbanites and/or out-staters who honestly don't know much about the city or possibly have never even been there except briefly for work or maybe an event. I've lived in Michigan my entire 36 years as a (White) suburbanite and have visited the city for business and pleasure countless times and have NEVER felt "threatened." I think part of the problem with the Detoit area is that it can not shake its' history of being the former "Murder Capitol of the USA" during the 70's and also that the area is probably the most racially segregated metro area in the whole nation; anything positive about Detroit rarely gets any press outside the city and suburbanites and especially outstaters have grown up with a very fearful and warped view of the city from what others have told them. Once again, there are certainly bad parts of town that ARE filled with gangs, drugs and other violent crimes; once again, however, there are plenty of things to enjoy in Detroit and/or in neighboring communities and I guess we would have to know if you are looking for family things like the Detroit Zoo (technically in neighboring Royal Oak), the Detroit Science Center, Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum (technically in neighboring Dearborn), etc. or more adult pursuits like comedy clubs such as Second City, the Detroit Symphony, Detroit Opera House or perhaps a show or concert at the Fox or State Theatres. Attending a game and or just visiting any of the sports stadiums (Red Wings for Hockey, Lions for football, Tigers for baseball), the casinos like others have suggested, any of the nice downtown bars/restaurants, etc. in the city are also options. Neighboring Royal Oak is kind of a popular "artsy," bohemian destination for many filled with a wide variety of shops, bars/clubs and dining options as well. Thanks for taking an interest in Detroit and please do not be "scared off" from the city by those with such a warped view (often from second and third hand stories of versus actual experience with the city)- once again I'm not saying the city is perfect. With the local economy in Southeast Michigan in such a poor state, you would think that people would actually be trying to encourage visitors and tourist dollars. You may want to check out www.michigan.org for more info on Detroit and/or other parts of the state and I know quite a bit of Michigan fairly well also so feel free to message me if you have any questions you think I can help you with.

LOL. Well....if you are actually entering the city itself let me suggest something...DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR AT NIGHT!! I'm serious. This city is legendary for how rough it is. If you so much as spend an hour there you'll be agape at how bad it is.
However...
They do have a great baseball stadium if you like baseball...they do have casinos....
Seriously though, there ain't much. Go to Canada?? Windsor is just across the river...

I wouldn't recommend ANYTHING in Detroit---it is a filthy city, lots of crime and very very scary. I grew up near there and now live 250 mi north---you couldn't get me to Detroit for a million bucks.
