I just saw an add for 60Minutes (Australia) and on Saturday night it's going to tell the storey about a girl who was kicked out of home, and then brought up by dogs. On the ad she's on all fours and barks like a dog. This is no joke. In the meantime (before the show airs) I want to know more about this. Has anyone heard of it?

No but there was a case similar in California. There was a girl named "Jeanie" (I think sp?), and when she was born, she spent her whole life in her crib, and when she was a toddler, adolescent, and teenager remained tied to her crib. Well, once social services discovered her locked in a closet, with no window, minimal sunlight that shined under the door, she became every psychologist in the U.S. dream study. She became a hug spectacle. I think this occurred in the early 70's. I know researchers from UCLA were allowed to study her language. What is interesting is, although she never had much contact with her family, she was given only one rag doll, and developed deep feelings for the ragdoll. She spoke "gibberish" that she only understood, and was quickly taught language, but she was unable to grasp it. Well, all she was able to say were terms like "get ball," or "feed me." Most researchers used her as a tool to prove that if language acquisition is not taught early, the child will never be able to catch up. Now this is strictly theory, but Jeanie's case proved to be quite interesting. What is even more interesting, Jeanie is alive today and thriving and remains in California.

Yep. Heard of it.

I went to one of the links and read: "Despite all this, Genie remained unable to master the basics of language.
Scientists wondered—-could she ever be taught to speak?"

I'm wondering, in cases like that, what languages do they try to teach them; English is a pretty hard language for a lot of non-native people to learn.

It's a pretty well documented phenomenon called "Feral Children". Google the phrase and you'll find case histories of way too many children found like this. It'll break your heart.

Well here's a similar story http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/world/newsid_3539000/3539482.stm
so I guess it's not impossible.
And in the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_children
they have a list of documented cases, one being in Australia this year but it's a boy and he was raised by Koalas.
