probably the first thing to do is find out which family members are missing and then ask people who are friends and family who knew the missing family members, and also ask the friends and family who were with the missing family members most recently,
and then after that you can look up phots and information on the internet about those people

Check the social security death index on "roots" or "ancestry" to see if they are dead.

Assumiung the death index doesn't have the name:

Pay a data service to find them. This isn't that expensive if you have their social security number.

WARNING: they are family members and haven't communicated in years. So, on-going separation is certainly their desire. They are likely going to be very annoyed that they were contacted. "Can you handle that snub?"
