Whatever food happens to be available for a meal, especially when offered to a guest: Having arrived unannounced for supper, we had to take "potluck".

A secondary use is to refer to whatever food happens to be available, especially when offered to a guest. The word potluck is often erroneously said to originate from the Native American term potlatch.
The word potluck dates from the sixteenth century, and the earliest written citation is 1592 - in England. It is a portmanteau word formed from pot and luck.

POT LUCK?
I'LL TELL YA WHAT POT LUCK IS.
POT LUCK IS WHEN PEOPLE HAVE A STUPID PARTY.
EVERYONE GOING TO THE PARTY BRINGS A POT FULL
OF CRAP THAT THEY JUST MADE OUT OF THE LEFTOVERS
IN THEIR REFRIDGERATOR. THEN THEY PUT ALL THE POTS
ON A LONG TABLE AND LET THE FLIES BUZZ AROUND THE
FOOD AND FEAST ON THE FOOD WHILE THEY TALK.
THEN, WHEN EVERYONE IS SO HUNGRY THEY ARE
DESPERATE ENOUGH TO EAT THE WEIRD FOOD IN THE
POTS, SOMEONE HUNGRY ENOUGH GOES UP TO ONE OF
THE POTS AND OPENS A LID AND THEY GET THE FIRST
WHIFF OF THE TOTAL CRAP THAT SOMEONE DUMPED
INTO SOME UGLY TOILET OF A POT.
THEN EVERYONE EATS THE CRAP.
THAT'S WHAT POT LUCK IS.
YOU;LL BE LUCKY IF YOU EAT SOMETHING GOOD.

A pot luck is just another name for a party with food. Every person invited takes some sort of food plate with food on it. Then there is like a raffle. the point is that everyone eats and leaves with a present.

a pot luck is usually a PICNIC, and everyone brings a dish, or something to add to the picnic..i.e.napkins, utensils, drinks, etc etc..

One of those get togethers where each person brings a food item(mac n cheese, potato salad, etc). That way there will be an array of food to grub on.
