They're OK on their own as soon as they are eating solid food, which can be as early as 3 weeks, but they should be left a minimum of 4 weeks. This is the usual weaning time for wild rabbits. Breeders usually leave them in a bit longer, up to 8 weeks, for optimal growth. I wean mine no earlier than 6 weeks.

Are we talking domestic or wild? Domestic rabbits should be weaned as early as 6 weeks but, not later than 8.

Commercial meat breeders will wean them as early as four weeks, but many pet stores worry about them having problems such as diarrhea and do not wean them until six to eight weeks of age. I usually wean the larger babies at five weeks leaving the smaller ones with the doe for another week.

My vet told me that the optimum time to wean is about 8 weeks and that we could adopt them out at 10.
