I went to a petstore the other day and I saw an orange floating around in the tank. Has anyone ever heard of this? If so what does this do and should I give it to my gold fish. Also will the citric acid in the orange affect the pH level of the tank?

oranges are great for goldfish or Koi. I used to have $2,000 koi and would give them sliced oranges as treats. The vitamins help their color, but make sure you have good filtration and pull out the oranges after an hour or so as they will decay in the warm water quickly

Goldfish are vegetarians and might eat any plant matter, so are pacus, and many other varieties but oscars are predatory and will eat fish foods or better still, other fish. Certainly the orange will affect the pH of the water...oranges have a pH range of 3 to about 5.5. A good treat for the vegetarian fish is well washed romaine lettuce...floating or tied to a plastic rod and pushed in the gravel.

Yes, Oscars and other fish enjoy a little treat like this from time to time. I worked at a pet store for a couple of years and we would use oranges and lettuce ever so often with our Oscars, gold fish, and salt water fish. Just be sure to take any uneaten food out after a short peroid of time so not to corrupt your water ph and ammonia level.

I raise fish and I gave my severum and gold fish lettuce and they love it. I have given them zuccini also. I have never heard of oranges, but if you do frequent water changes weekly, I doubt that the ph level will be affected. Gold fish do make a lot of waste so change the water often.

Should be a play toy for the fishes.
But for arowana, normally will float a table-tennis ball so that the fish will lift up to avoid dropsy eyes problem.

I've heard of giving fish various things, though I'm not sure ours would go for it since they are so picky, my oscar especially. Not sure what the orange would do, I say go back and ask! ; )

i've never heard of giving them oranges but i know that oriental farmers give their fish watermelons and zucchini, that sure could make a mess in an aquarium or small pond
