Mainly for enviornmental reasons in the desert-- it shields the hot sun in the day time, it is cool because they are loose fitting, and they also prevent sand from irritating the body.
The desert has low humidity, so it's actually cooler wearing loose cotton covering clothes than bare skin.. however, in other countries this might not apply (eg. Asia).
Also prevents sun burn and skin cancer etc., if someone lived in a desert area and had to go out into the sun each day for long periods of time.

These clothing styles are very practical and comfortable in an often-harsh climate. In the strong winds of the desert, air circulates freely and the robes float. The head coverings (worn in public by both men and women) are protection from the strong sunlight.

There are several reasons.
Women wear long clothes that cover their head and body to discourage adulterous thoughts.
Also in desert regions where the temperature reaches over 110 degrees consistently it is cooler to trap in your own body heat which is only 98 degrees.

They wear long, loose clothing to keep the sun and sand off them. Their countries are in the desert, and there's a whole of hot sun and blowing sand out there. Loose flowing robes provide lots of ventilation (like breeze up your skirt) and act like total-body shade and keep the sun and sand out. I live in a desert in New Mexico and wear loose jeans and long sleeved shirts and a hat to stay cool and keep the sun off.

Well for one it's really hot over there, and they use all of that clothing to sheild their bodies from the sun!
And I think the women do it because of culture. Something about women arn't allowed to show any part of their bodies. It's a cultural and religious thing. :P

Actually it doesn't. I live in Texas and wear long sleeve shirts and pants all year round and I'm less likely to sweat than any of my statesmen. I can't find the book to rec it to you but there have been several studies that proved wearing long clothes, in lighter colors, actually keeps you cooler than wearing shorter clothes.

no. its more than that. muslims believe that the more revealing clothes they wear, the higher the chance of them getting raped. if they see a girl wearing a short skirt and a shirt that shoes her cleavage, and then they find out that she gets raped, they wouldn't care because it would be the clothes that she wore that would have lead to her getting raped. the more clothes they wear, the more they will feel safe and wouldnt feel abandoned by their family. they don't really care about the weather. they care about their own safety and they care about their family. the two most important things, as well as reputation in their community.

They act upon the way of Last Prophet Mohammad(SAW).
Its the way of all prophets , inculding Jesus.
to wear long clothes, have beared, have the head covered wid a piece of cloth (turban), do marriage.
In summer, they feel much better than tight clothes and since they are looose, one doesnt feel hot due to that.

You have never been in the Middle East, then, right? The long robes protect the body from the sun, that they are flowing allows for air to circulate, and cool. much better clothing idea than close fitting shirts, shorts (sunburn) and long pants (sweat like hell).

The long clothes are actually designed to stave off the sun's heat and prevent dehydration. They're not trying to hide.
