NOT Goldfish (waste-producing and require frequent water changes)
NOT Betas (too boring and delicate...I've had 3 die on me)
NOT Angelfish (bad luck and waste producing)
BEST: #1 Gouramis (you don't need frequent water changes),
#2 silver dollars (active and hardy), #3 tetras, #4 mollies, #5 danios, #6 guppies
I made the mistake of buying goldfish as my first fish...bad choice! They kept dying, but later I learned that they will live if you
(1) have a tank lid (2) aerate the water (3) regularly change the water because they are messy (4) change the filter regularly.
If you don't want to buy much equipment, the very simplest type of fish to buy and keep alive would be a tank with gouramis...either gold, blue, blue-red, moon, or albino.
Why so easy? You don't need to aerate, heat, or filter the water! The only thing you really need is a fish tank! They are very hardy fish equipped with a special breathing system that allows them to live without aerating the water. Betas are also equipped with this breathing system.
Gouramis come in many colors...gold, blue, blue-gold, orange-black, and white. Kissing gouramis are also fun to watch.
Good luck and enjoy!

Depends on whether you are talking freshwater or saltwater. If you are looking for almost no hassle, get a betta or siamese fighting fish. They breathe air, can live in a handful of water so a very small container, and can eat dried worms, require little maintenance....clean their bowl once a week with room temp bottled drinking water to be safe (no chlorine or chloramine in it). Be sure not to overfeed and clean water when there is a hint of cloudiness...never temperature shock them with cold or warm water...keep it room temp!
If you want to go bigger, fancy goldfish are good too as they can live in a bowl or a tank. Filtration is better than not as these are dirty fish with inefficient digestion, so clean water regularly or get a good filter with biological, chemical, and mechanical filtration (see fish store guy for more info).
All fish whether you go to either extreme such as a betta in a bowl or a full blown saltwater reef aquarium are easy, but the right equipment, proper feeding and filtration are the key. Don't mess with the tank more than you absolutely need to. Most people kill the fish with kindness. Less is more with fish as they do not like their environments disturbed more than necessary.

Many are very easy but a charming little fish is the White Cloud Mountain Minnow....you can keep them at room temperature, they don't eat plants and are egg hangers (they swim by plants and leave a string of eggs and if you have enough plants, the babies will survive. A scarce variety is the long-finned type with flowing fins. They used to be called the 'Poor Man's Neon' when neons were rather expensive.

Bettas are pretty easy, but you can't have more than one per tank.
I've heard that goldfish are easy, but I've always managed to kill them.
I've had good luck with guppies, and they come in cool colors.
If you stop by a pet store that specializes in aquariums, then they will be able to give you great advice about which fish to purchase.

There are a lot of fresh water fishes that are easy to take care of. It just all depends on ur taste of fish. If i were i would go with any type of oscars. that are calm. they dont get scared easily and they will eat almost anything that can fit in their mouth..go with the oscar. it looks nice in a tank and easy. go with an oscar trust me i have one.

Goldfish are great for beginners. They're very tough. They can go withuot food for up to 2 weeks, live in tropical or cold water-down to 0 celcius. They come in tons of different colours and varieties. Only thing is they poop alot so, you'll have to get a good filter system. Good luck.

I have a male beta fish. All you need is a fish bowl and some spring water. Feed him a tiny bit daily and change his water once a week. That simple. No heater or air pump needed.

Goldfish, betta, and I think guppies? I don't no. I have 2 guppies now, but they don't eat because all the other fish hog the food. I put them in a different tank but they still won't eat. What do guppies eat?
