well, it's a tough call. restaurants count on tips to cover some of their staff's salary, which makes it possible for the restaurant to make a profit. i'm not sure what the fair salary would be, and i'm sure it varies by the type of job and establishment, since some result in better tips than others. however, i do know that many restaurants would go out of business if staff salaries were much higher. then there would be no jobs at all.

one problem is that tips in restaurants are getting too high in some places. if i'm expected to leave a 20% tip, i'm not going to want to pay too much for the meal, so the restaurant will have to keep their prices down, which impacts how much they can pay their waitstaff. makes you dizzy, doesn't it.

minimum wage itself is a tricky subject. lower wages = more jobs. higher minimum wage = fewer jobs. go figure.

I disagree. What is unfair are the minimum wage laws by themselves. For if there is somebody that would work for a smaller payment, that means that this very person needs the money more than the other. Why the person that requires to earn more is better than the person that accepts to earn less? If there is a person that can do the very same job for less, this person wins, the boss wins, the buyers wins, the society as a whole wins. The only person that lose is the one that unfairly required a higher wage than the smallest wage offered in the market. The economical fallacy of the minimum wage is very well explained in the Economics literature, I suggest the book indicated bellow in the source.

As a conservative I find this proposal revolting. The way it is stated is that the tips would make up for the difference in minimum wage, gee I wish I could get people to work for me that created their own income. Waiting tables is a thankless job and unfortunately it is one of the few options opened to women that are undereducated or or single mothers. To pull the rug out from underneath these people is a crime.

in alot of states it already is lower then minium wage... in the state i am in i work with alot of people that get tips vs my 8.00 an hour and they get paid WAY more then i do becauase of tips. if you lower minimum wage on those jobs then the price of the good may go down...like cheaper restaurant food. (yes i know it just means more profit not cheaper food but im an optimist)

it wont make much of a differance. chances are people will compensate you more at jobs that are common tip jobs like waitress becuase it is becoming an issue.

i know that certain jobs, such as waitresses get what you call tip jobs. But I believe that they should be paid minimum wage, and the tip part should be given as an extra, because the job is hard to do. If you ever notice the harder the job, the lower the pay.

lowering minimum wage jobs just continues the destruction of the middle class. The only people who benefit from the destruction of the middle class is the wealthy elite who pocket more and more $$$. When congress ties minimum wages to roll-back of the inheritence tax they shove wealth in the face of every person working hard in this country to raise and support a family.

each and every time i flow to the food market, the fee of food is going up everywhere from 20 cents to a dollar - this provides up, surprisingly once I ought to flow with the right comparable quantity of money I had to shop with 300 and sixty 5 days in the past. so as meaning, each and every time I shop, one greater merchandise should be left off the record, just to have adequate funds actual the purposes. If Washington has one among optimum minimum wages & the economic device is one among the main suitable - seems to me a greater physically powerful minimun salary is stable ingredient. In Pa., i think of that's $5 some thing perfect now - somewhat livable. If those human beings making $6 - $9/hr. do no longer decide for a strengthen, then why do the congressmen & senators shop giving themselves a strengthen whilst they're alread making approximately $a hundred and forty,000? they're so blinded by using greed, they are able to't see the human beings who they decide for to vote for them, are going devoid of adequate food or warmth. that's a shame.

Just to play devil's advocate here, you need to remember that alterations to the economy like that can cause violent backlashes. For example, when the percentage of money taken from a ticket sale was raised by a mere 10% by the movie production companies, nearly half of the world's theatre's went out of business. Any alteration to the economy like that must be taken with extreme precaution.

It is very unfair for them to try and do that. It should be mandatory for everyone, at the very minimum, to receive minimum wage. the poverty in the United States is just going to keep increasing while the government keeps fattening their wallets.
