my car battery was disconnected while overseas for a few months, now the IU is not working, can it be fixed? and prevented in future when i go overseas again

What is the "IU"
The computer should have been OK on most cars. BMW's go nuts when disconnected.

The first thing that I would do is to take your battery to a parts place and have them do a load test on the battery. I use to own a service station and sold many batteries, ever so often we would get a brand new one the would not hold a charge.

Just jump start your vehicle. After you get it home or wherever you are going put a charger on it. If it still won't work after that then go buy another battery.
