1)The person who decided what the "truth" was would be king.
2)Politics is the game of give and take where ideas are hashed out. It is also the expression of opinion. Opinion may contain truth but is not truth. It is a viewpoint on the truth.
3) Many political statements are based on statistics. In politics (as the old saying goes), there are lies, d@#! lies, and statistics.

Such laws do apply to political ads, but by the time the case went to court the damage would be done and the election over.

There are laws against this. Its just that politicans have very smart lawyers behind them who know how to word the ad so that they do not necessarily break the law.
