If you are talking about space research you are talking about many subjects that range from material science to astrophysics, from communication to life-support systems. The indolent of statistics in these fields will vary from field to field. As you probably know any measurement contains uncertainty, some events are dependent on other events and all that. I would say anywhere where measurements are involved or probable events are taking place the statistical mathematics would be employed.

Everything that involves communications involves statistics/probability. Communication signals are considered random signals.
