This is a touchy one. The odor causing chemicals in farts are hydrogen sulfide, other sulfur containing materials (remember sulfur smells like rotting eggs), and certain nitrogen containing materials. Assuming you have an ideal air-tight container, none of it should be able to escape. I don't believe the different components react with each other, but it's possible for at least the hydrogen sulfide and the other sulfur stuff to react with the container. Apparently polyproylene plastics are the way to go. Avoid glass and rubber.

Properly sealed, I would guess it would last for quite along time, but I have no idea how long that would be. You can blow smoke inside a balloon and it will still be there when you pop it later. It doesn't work with light, that much I know. You can seal up an opaque container in full sunlight but when you open it in total darkness, you won't see so much as a glimmer. I've always wondered why that is. On another thought, wouldn't you be surprised if it eventually settled out on the bottom of the jar in a thick brown pasty smear?

see. u know when u really seal a jar, everything is supposed to stay in it forever.... but the fart gas molecules, for that matter , any gas molecules are so tiny that they will most probably escape. because, however tightly u close the jar, there are openings , though they are like thinner than , say 1000microns, the gas molecules , which are much more smaller than that, will escape. but try it and then tell us all :-)

i can only imagine opening up a jar from the 1800's and taking a big wiff of nasty gas from wayyy back when they ate some nasty stuff....sounds absolutly horrible...but sort of cool at the same time...maybe you have to shake it up to get the fart back going again..haha

if the molecules remain trapped inside without escaping, i suppose e smell will last.
but if the molecules are unstable and decomposed into something else, then it wont.

I believe the 'smell' would last as long as the flame ignition that was sent into torch mode....for that 'firework' effect....Enjoy!
