This word seems to be sneaking into common use. I started hearing it on a few podcasts starting a few months ago. But nothing in the general public. Then today I was talking to someone and they used it. It's clearly spreading. Is it even in the dictionary?

It's been a while for me since I've first heard the word, "ginormous." I guess it's common right now in my area. The first time I heard it was about two years ago. I know this for sure because I remember hearing it for the first time from my friends that I met two years ago. Anyway, it's a collaboration of the words, "gigantic" and "enormous" to emphasize grandness. Hope that helps! :)
And no, I don't think it's in the dictionary, at least not yet, haha. (As of right now, my Microsoft Word program is telling me that it's misspelled).

The people there come to praise and worship from the heart and not for outward kudos or appearance. That needs to be the aim of every fellowship on the planet, but there are some Pharisees out there!

I believe the word was introduced by Will Ferrell in the 2004 movie "Elf." It was the first I ever heard the word and it is no surprise that Will Ferrell would come up with it.

It is a made up word combination of gigantic and enormous, it is not in any of my dictionaries, they are too old. it first appears in 1984 in a movie "Transformers" (Japanese animation).
It was a term created by Scatman Crothers

Edit: it is in my shorter oxford as mid 20th century

I don't believe it's in the dictionary. I think it's a combination of gigantic and enormous. I think it sounds kind of silly, personally. I've heard it since I was a little girl, and it just kind of goes in and out of fashion, I guess.

"GINORMOUS" was actually the 2005 "made-up word of the year." With that in mind, I'm assuming it came around sometime in 2005.
