Because great answers deserve recognition. The ten points allows people who contribute the best answer and help educate others the ability to have a sense of edification (shown by points) that they are helping others. The points act as a barometer to show the success the answerer is having in enriching others lives.

Today somebody said I didnt have enough best answers .
I got 21 best answers . I like it when i get a best answer because that means I got picked out of everybody here . Thats feels good and warm inside . I always smile when I get a best answer. I don't really do it for the points .
