most kids are much smarter today. they pick up a lot more and are more adaptable. not only that they are maturing at a faster rate and are engaged in a lot more activities than kids were 10 years back. it's crazy!

You would have to really define what you consider 'smarter.' I think a kid from 100 years ago would do just as well, if not better in school today and a kid from today put back 100 years would struggle more. It has to do with many things: society, technology, knowledge/training of teachers, family structure, expectations of the student about their future, etc.

Kids years ago had to do more work around the home at a younger age than kids do today (if at all). Girls got married at a younger age, so they often didn't get a full education because they were expected to stay home and make babies. Much has changed over the years, but some things never change...

I've heard there may never be another Einstein or Da Vinci, but who knows. If one person isn't the first to invent/theorize something, it will eventually be done by someone else. I think mankind molds kids to be as smart as they need to be in the era they live in and if some go beyond that, they will be the ones to excel and be the next generation of leaders.

Kids are just as smart as they have ever been. They learn just as fast and just as much.

Kids have always been smart and could always run circles around their elders.

What has changed is WHAT they learn and HOW they learn it. It may seem like kids are maturing younger, but that's just one crowd. Young people are staying single longer. It used to be that people were expected to get married by the time they graduated from high school, especially girls. Now they go to college, have a career, then MAYBE they get married.

Kids have a lot more tools which help them to learn, which they didn't used to have. They are left alone a lot more and are expected to do more, be more independent before they can handle the responsibility.

So it's a whole different culture than when I grew up. A lot of differences that are attributable to the situation, but not their actual intelligence. They are very smart, but not any smarter than any child at any time in history.

The Young people today have more information at their fingertips than people 100 years ago ever imagined possible. Although the knowledge of the world and things that are going on is far greater the understanding of it all has been narrowed to meet political agendas. Their young brains are flooded with data and too often not given enough skills to make good judgments of what they see. The schools are more costly but less effective than 100 years ago because the social structure has declined so much. Families are fragmented and the resulting lack of parental influences and control has produce a very ignorant country. The morality has declined as the family strength declined. The rush to obtain material things has suppressed the concern for others and how what is done will effect others. Simpler times gave people time to relax and not e so hyper. More drugs are taken today that could have been imagined 100 years ago.

In the past : Kids used to go out and play with each other. Interact, learn .. discover..read.. chat and talk. They got smarter slower.. but once they are adults.. they were very smart.
Nowadays : Kids gets all the info and challenges in home.. on the computer,, PS, TV and Internet.. but they do not employ all this information because they interact less with each other, the outdoor environment.. the risks outdoor than the past generations kids.. and the result, when they are adults.. they actually less mature and smart than the previous generations.

I think that children born in the past are smarter than children born in the recent times. Children now are too dependent on computers and all the electronics executing all the things they would teach the kids in the past.
For example, and this is a true story. I was talking to my 12 year old niece. She stated to me that she knows how to search things on the internet. However, when I asked her what 9 times 9 is, she didn't know.

I don't necessarily think kids have different brains from years past, but they definitely have different opportunities and advanced skills and teachings. Kids are exposed to much more, much sooner than ever before. Example: I didn't learn geometry until I was in high school, but my 10 year old niece was accepted in an advanced placement geometry class...at 4th grade!!!! So yeah, kids are "smarter" today -- but it's only because we've created an environment that nurtures intelligence.

Kids have a lot more opportunity today, but I believe that as time passes and technology increases students are not learning the same materials that they once used to. There once was a time where all calculations had to be made by hand and not by calculator. There once was a time where students worked constantsly in order to learn thier lessons. The learning techniques of the past were so vigorous that they would be considered corporal pusnishment today. This made them better, harder working students, just because they had no choice but to be.

Kids r definately smarter today then they were ever before. Increased compition, exposer to much more information through, and parents r also encouraging them to be smarter to boldly face the world.
They r increasingly been exposed to newer tech then the people 10 yrs ago. So these factors r definately contributing towards mking kids smarter.

I agree with Tommyboy really.

You have to define smarter.

Being able to do something quicker, being able to catch on something new, having a lot of knowledge, being able to manipulate available resources to attain the objective, being able to find a different solution, being able to nitpick and troubleshoot... all these and more are signs of intelligence.

Being able to recite Shakespeare is great. Being able to fix up your own computer with no prior knowledge is marvellous. Being able to choreograph a perfect dance is stupendous. Being able to hack into high-security systems is amazing.

Everyone is intelligent in their own way.

Dyslexic people cannot read nor spell but they are known to be able to communicate very well and tend to be fantastic speakers and great convincers. That would be something most scientists and inventors envy. Yet these quiet ones have come up with inventions which have made life very much simpler today.

I say in general, kids are as smart, if not smarter, today. Being lazy is a side-effect of being smart. It could even be a motivation to showing intelligence.

Hey the person who invented the wheel must have found it bothersome to walk isn't it?

Lazy kids come up with the most innovative and most convincing excuses. They come up with good ways to skip class, get out of doing homework...

Eventually (if they do) as a delinquent, they come up with more than ample ways to outwit the police and the legal system.

Inventions today are not given as much recognition as before. Everyone can name the person who invented the phone... but only half can name the WWW inventor. Inventions today are far more advanced than those of the past.

But it could be due to the availability of resources and knowledge that led to the advancement. Put Edison here and he may or may not be as outstanding... who knows?
