If you really want to learn the BEST place to go is school. You can learn to speak, read, and write the language. You will get the basics.

I also suggest that you get a teach yourself Japanese or something to start off. It will make class easy. Learn the simple stuff like numbers, months, and some nouns. Best to learn some verbs as well.

Once your finish school (if possible) than you can have a good foundation.

You could learn by:
- softwares on how to speak Japanese, there are a lot to choose from.
- Books like Japanese Pharase Book by lonely planet. I have one, and its a good start.
- J-music and anime. Try listening to Japanese music or watching anime. You'll learn more words since they have great artworks and catchy tunes. You might get interested in translating these.

In case you want your learning to be official you could have formal lessons and take JLPT(Japanese Language Proficiency Test) They have 4 levels with Level 4 as the lowest. This level only requires you to learn around 150 words and Kanji characters. You may visit the Japan Foundation website for the rest of the details. I'll be taking it this December. Good luck! Try taking Japanese categories on Saturday. Everywhere I've been consistently host Japanese categories. Check out your neighborhood neighborhood middle. Watching Japanese suggests, dramas and anime will customarily train you the fundamentals if you happen to watch adequate. From what men and women inform me, they consider its convenient. But once they do talk it, they announciate it weirdly do to the truth that they do not have this Japanese accessory.

Honto? - means "Really?" -or- "Honto!"> "Really!"
Oyasumi-nasai - means "Good night."
Ichiban (easy one) - means "number one."
Moshi,Moshi - is "Hello" (when answering the phone.)
Cho'to ma'te, kudasai masen - means "Just a moment, please."
Gomen'asai - "I'm sorry."
Dozo - "Please." A gracious gesture as in "Please go ahead of me."
otsui des - "It is hot!"
oishii des - "It tastes yummy!"
migi (a soft 'g' as in "gum") - "Right" as: "-on the right," or "turn right."
hidati - "Left."
masugu - "Straight ahead."
Ohaiyo Gosaimus - "Good morning!" (The 'ai' combination in both is a short 'a' followed by a long 'e' sound.)
Konnichiwa - "Good day!"
Konbon-wa - "Good evening!"
Ikura-des? - "How much is it?" as in "How much does it cost?"

There's probably more in the deep recesses of my brain. It's nearly 40 years since I lived and attended (graduated) H.S. in Tokyo, but occassionally a Japanese word or phrase will pop into my head. (Usually when I'm talking to my cat.) I hope these tidbits prove helpful. If I remember any more, I'll try to pass them on.
