4H-2H pencil for preliminary outline sketches (don't press too hard with these, can be very hard to erase), HB-6B pencils for shading, kneaded eraser for cleaning up lines and also reduction of shadows when you over-do it. Paper: the heavier the weight (60, 80 lbs.), typically, the smoother the "tooth" or roughness of the surface; you can go to your local art shop and buy individual pieces of drawing paper for a unique look for the overall composition. Last, patience. This you cannot buy and it is one of the characteristics that seperates good artists from the others.

all you need is pencil and paper. You can get a box set of pencils which have varying degrees of softness. These can be handy because you can get a blacker black with a softer pencil and a mixed set will allow you to experiment and find out which you prefer. Sketch paper is usually better because it isn't as shiny as copy paper for eg. and you can smudge the pencils with better result.
The best thing to do is experiment and the best thing about drawing is that you really don't need any of this expensive stuff to start.. Just pick up pencil and paper.

Well, this is custom made for me because I do oil portraits and mostly composities from photos. Pencil is less expensive but is NOT as WOW a gift as oils. Oil takes longer. Oil will be around for at least 400 years. Since I do oils, I think that they are THE superior way to record the faces of the people that are in this time in history. There are Greek funereal portraits that are 4000 years old and we can look into the eyes of their likenesses today. Pencil will be lovely. Oil is a legacy.

You need different ranges of pencil for different schemes such as HB,2B,2H,4B and H pencils for outlining, shading, hatching and smudging respectively. Always have a soft, clean cotton cloth and a neat eraser with you. have an exactly flat drawing board and paper clips.

For pencil portraits if its just black n white, then HB pencils are very good. If you need better effects, then you may also use charcoal pensils that come in black colou. This would be really black in colour.
