If the problem is mold or mildew, you may need to clear the space out, remove and/or clean up any storage places that are damp, repaint using a product like Kilz. Perhaps you can just mop floors and scrub walls with bleach water. Bleach isn't a very eco-friendly chemical, but it is a simple and cheap product, and may be safer to use (if well ventilated) than other mold and mildew products.

After that, or if the first step isn't needed, choose the places to put fans, and use your common sense to block doors to upstairs, and open any windows that may be in the basement. You are trying to create a thorough cross ventilation of airflow moving through the spaces and OUT of the house.

Then select places to put buckets of full strength vinegar or trays of baking soda. They should be in central locations or the middle of each room, etc and should be in the traffic of the air flow created by your fans and open windows.

Hope this helps you!

First of all, you need to find out where the smell is coming from. Is there fungas or mold growing in the basement? If so, you will need to get rid of what ever is infected, cutting piece of carpet or wall, etc., loose and throwing it out in a plastic bag. Then SCRUB with CLOROX. Mold and fungas are VERY bad for your health. Be careful, use gloves, face mask, long sleeves and maybe put something over your hair. Please be careful.
It maybe a water leak. Check all lines and repair, then clean with CLOROX.
Believe it or not, pro's use it all the time.
Good luck.

Charcoal briquets are very good at absorbing odors - place them in bowls or you can hang them in those potato sacks that are the mesh type. Our basement smelled like cat litter box when we first moved here and we hung bags of charcoal around and no more smell!

Cut the legs off old panty hose, fill 1/2 full with moth balls and tie from rafters or pipes. Space about 6 feet apart.
