Not a real side-scroller, but me and some buddies used to play Road Rash for hours on end. It's a motorcycle racing game, where you can kick, punch, and use a crowbar on your friends and knock them off their bikes. Fun times. The classic sidescroller for Genesis is, of course Sonic the Hedgehog.

Try going out on a limb here but Xmen was a great scroller of that time. Also check out power rangers, and there is a comic type game you should check out. I can't think of the name of it though. I think it's called Comix zone. All the mortal combats were pretty cool, terminator, carnage(spider-man), basically any of the games from Genesis. Even Jordan had a game on Sega. He was a super hero. Checking out ebay is your best bet.

Go to www.thesmartass.info and then click on the thing on the left that says Sega Genesis games online. You'll see a flag down menu showing all these sega genesis games and you can also play them.

Sonic the Hedgehog. It sold the most on the SEGA genisis, and back then the Sonic games were actually competable with Mario games. Don't get any 3D Sonic games though; they're ok, but not GREAT.
