Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco are emo/alternative/pop-punk. Panic! is a little more synth-pop, i.e. the Killers. But even Pete Wentz the Fall Out Boy frontman in an interview was asked if FOB was emo. He said they were, and that they were an emotional punk band. Panic! is also.

The sister's right. Fallout Boy and Panic At The Disco ARE horrible pop rock.

"Emo" does NOT mean "emotional". It is NOT Fallout Boy, Panic At The Disco, MCR, Dashboard Confessional, or anything else that MTV, the record labels, and Hot Topic have led you to believe. "Emo" is not skinny dudes with girly voices singing about failed relationships; nor is it side-bangs, razorblades, MySpace, or tight pants; nor is it meaningless metaphors and similies such as "My arms are like pinecones" or anything with the words "autumn", "falling", "leaves", "knife", "heart", "bleeding", or "razorblade".

The real story: In the early 1990s, there was a movement in the hardcore genre known as "Emotive Hardcore" which was spearheaded by Rites Of Spring, One Last Wish, Embrace, Beef Eater, and a few other bands. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, coined the term "Emo" as an insult for kids who really liked these bands. That's right, "emo" was not something kids called themselves. It exploded from there--Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous emo label. Bands such as I Hate Myself, Saetia, Hot Cross, A Day In Black And White, You And I, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, et al, came within the next decade. Most of these bands have since broken up, but there's always the occasional hold-out (The majority of Level-Plane Records' acts have been emo bands). There were also bands such as Fugazi, Texas Is The Reason, and Sunny Day Real estate, but they were more indie-rock than emo.

Since the late '90s, bands have emerged in the vein of Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday, and somewhere some journalist said, "Well, no one knows what 'emo' is, so I'll just call these bands emo." Since then, the spiral has continued downward into the current amalgamation of bands MTV has led you to believe is "emo".

There you have it: "Emo" is NOT "emotional". If it really meant that, then ALL music that's ever been made, which carries some emotional baggage to it, would be instantly classified as emo.

i in my opinion do in comparison to Fall Out Boy, and Panic! on the Disco is okay... yet, i think of that they are poppy-punk bands. Oh, and that i admire hardcore bands like As I Lay demise and with the aid of the Eyes Of The lifeless and Norma Jean.
