And can we stop the damned train before it explodes into the buffers? Personally I don't think so as we have let things slip too far. Too pessimistic, what say you?

Oh I agree with you completely.
20 years ago, I worked all round Europe and people used to talk to me about our "Nanny state" and how "Anally retentive" the Brits are, but being close to the situation, I couldn't see it.
But I left and moved to Italy 10 years ago, and believe me, now it sticks out like a saw thumb!.
And it is not only the "Nanny stats". which is bad enough.
I think the whole nation is being "Dumbed down" by the appalling rubbish on TV. You are all being made to think that "crap" is really important. Listen up guys, IT DOES NOT MATTER A DAMN WHO GETS THROWN OUT OF THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE, OR WHO IS DOING WHAT TO WHOM THERE!!!
Also associated with this, Ignorance seems to be becoming a virtue. As long as you can spout the headlines and first paragraph of any article from a newspaper (a dissertation that begins "In my opinion...") that is all that is needed to be regarded as "savvy".
There is also a rapidly growing "Piss-you-off" culture; see how LITTLE you can get away with doing, or make the service SO bad that people will be forced to pay more for a better service, and/or go elsewhere. And everyone says "SHHH, Don't make a fuss, everyone is looking at us", so you pays your money and ignore the shite service and pretend it isn't happening.
And underneath it all, there is the insidious loss of personal freedoms in the name of "Freedom". Your phone calls are all recorded, your movements are all monitored and recorded, they want you to carry an ID card with an unnecessary amount of data, your passport now TRANSMITS data about you! (Did you know that? It started in MAY! when they started fitting an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device) into all new passports).
The police now don't seem interested in crime, only hassling people.
And finally, the government does what it wants! It releases a constant stream of knee-jerk legislation, ALL off which dds further restrictions to YOUR rights and freedoms! But in any case, it is not in the least bit interested in what the public really does want! It does what the Police, or George W Bush want it to do, no matter whose "best interests" are effected by it.
I agree, Britain is going to hell at great speed.
Can you do anything about it? No, I don't think you can it has gone too far, and it is moving too fast with too much momentum.
My advice? JUMP SHIP!

they have to succeed in this mission if they improve the situation in Basra and south of Iraq they will be respected all over the world don't be astonished ,they challenge all other forces who want to make them fail but it's their fault they ask the consult from the false educated people and not use the force in the perfect place and time just like their parteners do in all Iraq

Sounds OK to me, if I was travelling to hell via British rail I would never reach the place, due to 'wrong sort of leaves' on the track etc!
