I think that's exactly it--they're protected by that screen!

But some people blow off in real life, too.

Actually, a few of you came really close to the psychological reasoning for this.

A) Anonymity. You have a screen name, but the info that goes with it is only as good as the user wishes it to be. That is a plain and simple fact. People feel that they can do anything without repercussions and without consequence. What most of these people are not smart enough, or educated enough to realize , is that when they access this and most other large corporate type sites, not only is their IP address loged, but so is the MAC address (that would be the very individual and uniquie ID of your computer's network access point), so you all may want to remember that in the future. (and no, spoofers aren't all that either for the geeks)

B) Anyone with even a basic class in psychology knows that humans as a species have strong basic tendencies to fear that which they do not understand, and hate that which they fear. Some of the biggest gay bashing homophobes are actually closet cases themselves. Thing is, you repress something long enough in your own psyche, you begin the process of self loathing, but in order to hold yourself above that, you transfer that anger to others in the group that you do not wish to be a part of. On top of that, long term repression can lead to significant increases in anti social and, in some cases, even sociaopathic behaviors. All becasue you are too afraid to love yourself for who you are. Kind of scary when you really think about it isn't it?

The opinion others may hold is not what causes problems it is the way that people are no longer people they are suddenly targets. If I disagree with something and if asked I will state my feelings on the subject but hopefully in a way that shows thought not thug and love not loathe. Unfortunately there is one thing that all people deal with no matter what group society tries to label them. The common problem faced by all? STUPIDITY.
yes people so blinded by their own agenda that they fail to see people and only see stereotypes. Coming from the Conservative side of the coin I try to avoid the trap of going ,"look there is John
because he is gay he must think THIS way. from the liberal side I have heard the amusing statement that we right wingers are all the same just trying to pigeon hole the left......As you can see stupidity knows no bounds

Computer or no computer they are still going to be the same person and feel the same way. Maybe u should ask yourselves the same question why do u go out of your way to let everyone know about your sexuality? Who cares? Why do u shove it in peoples face and thats all what gay people talk about is how gay they are.
I lived in NC & IL both states i had les & gay friends thats all what they talked about.

Don't be so quick to judge our dissaproval....remember
you also were in the closet until recently. (wimp). Why?
because you know as well as I do that it is absolutely
wrong...we weren't made to be Adam and Steve. And
gays don't even act normal....all they think and talk about
is sex......even normal husband and wives don't spend all
their time talking sex....there are other things going on in
this life but you have only one focus. No wonder you used
to be called "queers". Your kind has created a terrible disease
called Aids and it is definitely a "gay disease".

The anonymity of the internet lets people feel like they can react on the basest impulses without any fear of consequence, social or otherwise. In short: same as any other trolls.

They are like the Nazis who marched through Skokie (Jewish suburb of Chicago) back in the 1970s.

Yes, free speech allows them to strut their stuff. But doing so in the milieu of their victims just makes them look evil.

I guess they like to look evil?

They like the anonymity of it. No real consequences of expressing themselves, except maybe losing a few points or a screen name.
