I don't really believe in all that UFO crap, but think about this. If there is a practically infinite and growing number of civilizations spread across the universe, some of whom have had billion year head starts on us, then surely at least one has been to earth. Where am I going wrong here? It seems pretty likely, in my opinion.

wrong assumption aliens existing does not mean traveling and it's a BIG universe NOT TO MENTION that FTL may be impossible and you assume that they would WANT to travel also the oldest life forms in existance may be us AT THIS TIME you are assuming that they are very old how long will WE BE AROUND

One of the biggest issue with space travel is distance, which most of the people have mentioned.

However, I think the biggest reason why aliens couldn't have reached Earth is because their civilization did not last long enough for that to happen. Imagine that somewhere out there, there is an Earth like planet with intelligent lifeform. Those guys over there are probably pondering the same thing as we are - "has other intelligent lives reached us yet". Well, look at us now, a big chuck of the world is still at war, several countries are raising the potential for nuclear warfare, our wildlife are going toward extinction due to global warming. Our planet is already falling apart, and we haven't even reached beyond Mars (manned mission), let alone doing FTL travel or any form of crazy technology.

Good point about FTL (Faster Than Light) travel being impossible. Since observation indicates space is accelerating outward (universal expansion), it seems more probable that an advanced intelligent form of life would have had greater probability of travelling by Earth millions, hundreds of millions or billions of Earth years ago long before we were around. Sorry, this is probably a non-answer to the question, but I was thinking out loud...

Given the assumption that we are not alone, it is very probable that aliens have at least "passed by earth." But consider, this is a HUGE universe, and what is your criterior for the term "passed by earth?" If they were to pass by at 100 light years, that could be considered a near miss by universe standards. The earth is an insignificant, small planet amoung billions of seemingly more interesting places for an alien space explorer to investigate. And, no, I don't believe we have been "visited" - not now or ever.

there have been reports of alien matter... such as the RED RAIN that occured in cambodia i think last year.

in that case, there were tiny red particles found in a local lake near the point of impact from a 10lb meteorite. the chemical composition of the red rain was not terrestrial in nature and has very unique properties and was reported on fairly well in some well-regarded science news journals.

Probably has. I refuse to believe that we are the only "things" that exist in the universe. Just because we can't see it/them doesn't mean they don't exist. When they say "things" can't survive closer to the sun because it is too hot, or farther because it is too cold i don't believe that either..because those other "things" are going to be created to live/survive in that certain atmosphere. No way in telling how. One of the many mysteries of life.

I think it would be egotistical on our parts to believe that "we" are the only life out there. The universe is so vast that there must be life of some form or another out there.

Speculation is just that, speculative. You can take all the statistics and probabilities that you want, but without any real evidence you can not make that assertion with the hope of it holding water.
