idle wont go down on a 1998 chevy 1500 pick-up stays around 1500 - 2000 RPM and goes down very slowely with foot off gas

well a little more info would help here, like just after a cold start, anytime when you drive it. there are only two things that control idle, idle air control ( most likely the culprit) or a vacuum leak but the idle wouldnt be able to go down if it was a vacuum leak. the idle air control is just that, it controls the air at idle, if its not working or dirty it cant perform correctly and when the engine gets to much air at idle the computor sends more fuel hence the high idle.

You need to change the fast idle sensor on the throttle body
It's on the left side looking at the engine.

look just below your breather cap and you will see a black hose on the dead center of your throttle body with a 90 degree angle in it that heads left to the top of the valve cover on the passenger side if it has any vacuum loss at all this will also cause your syptoms

maybe there's something stuck in the throttle plate holding it open? does it slam into drive when you put it in gear?
