it depends on what style of music you're into, or who you're playing for. i'm a guitar teacher and i've played in a bunch of bands before, and done solo gigs too.

heres some stuff i used to do just instrumental that always went over well....

voodoo chile - slight return, by hendix. layla by clapton/derek and the dominoes, obsession confession by slash, summer song + back to shalla bal by joe satriani, dee by randy rhoads, sugarfoot rag, a song thats been done by everyone..... lol.... leyenda/asturia by narcisco yepes....

the list goes on, but those are some that are good. i also did a bunch of other random things, the theme from king of the hill, beavis and butthead, mario brothers, adams family, ninja gaiden video game.....

base it on the crowd you're playing for, and dont limit yourself to one style.

Almost any song sounds good on the guitar by itself. Check out Surfing with the Alien-Joe Satriani, One-Metallica, Master of Puppets-Metallica, Aces High-Iron Maiden, Johnny B. Goode-Chuck Berry, Bark at the Moon-Ozzy, etc. the list just goes on and on. Word to the wise though don't play Stairway to Heaven at your local music store because you never know there might be one of those signs around like there was in Wayne's World.

Rush has a few songs YYZ, Red Barchetta, The Trees and La Villa Strangiato. All of those are very great pieces of music theory.

Anything flamenco or classical guitar, Rockers and Redneck twangers are a dime a dozen, so try something more distinctive, eh, maybe? Listen to Ottmar Liebert's "Nouveau Flamenco" and take some inspiration, man!
