Before I got my own wireless router I used to connect to WLAN from one of the access points in neighbourhood which had become default.Now everytime I switch on my WLAN it tries to find the earlier default 1st.How can I change the old default to make my access point as the default one?

Yes, here is how (assuming you are using Windows XP):
open Network Connections;
right-click on your Wireless connection;
open the Properties;
click on the Wireless Networks tab;
in the middle will be the Preferred Networks list;
highlight the offending network and Delete it.
